Lighter DEX Testnet Guide: Practice Trading and Test Your Bot With Free Test USDC (2026)

How to use the Lighter DEX testnet: the testnet endpoint, how the faucet funds a test account with free USDC, what matches mainnet and what does not, how to point the Python and Go SDKs at testnet, and why there is no 'fun mode' or paper trading on the main app.

Lighter DEX testnet facts: endpoint testnet.zklighter.elliot.ai, faucet gives free test USDC, same 0 percent fees as mainnet, no points, occasional resets
Testnet essentials. Data as of September 2026, compiled by Lighter DEX Perp.

Lighter trading has a public testnet at testnet.zklighter.elliot.ai where you can place perp orders with free test USDC, try every order type, and run a bot end to end without risking a dollar. It answers three searches at once: "Lighter DEX testnet," "Lighter DEX fun mode" and "Lighter demo." The mainnet app has no paper-trading toggle; the testnet is your practice environment. Below you get how to get funded, what behaves differently from mainnet, how to point the official SDKs at it, and how to move to real trading safely. Verified against apidocs.lighter.xyz and the SDK repositories in October 2026.

Is there a Lighter "fun mode" or paper trading?

No. The mainnet app at app.lighter.xyz trades real money only; there is no demo toggle, simulated balance or "fun mode" inside it. Searches for "Lighter fun mode" usually come from people who saw that phrase on other platforms. On Lighter, practice happens on the testnet, which is a full copy of the exchange with worthless tokens. Everything you learn there about order types, margin modes and liquidation behaviour transfers directly. Beginner walkthrough of the real interface: Lighter DEX login and first trade.

How to get test USDC

The testnet has no usable Ethereum L1 behind it, so you cannot deposit. The only funding path is the faucet:

  1. Create your testnet account by connecting a wallet to the testnet front end or by registering through the SDK's system_setup example pointed at the testnet URL.
  2. Call the faucet endpoint with your Ethereum address:
GET https://testnet.zklighter.elliot.ai/api/v1/faucet?l1_address=0xYOURADDRESS
  1. The faucet creates the account if needed and credits test USDC immediately. No signature, no gas.

Two caveats. The faucet is undocumented and intermittently unreliable; if it returns an error, wait and retry rather than assuming your setup is wrong. And after a testnet reset your balance disappears; call the faucet again.

What is different from mainnet

  • Market indices and decimals differ. Market 0 is not guaranteed to be BTC. Always read GET /api/v1/orderBookDetails on the environment you are using and never hardcode indices across environments.
  • Liquidity is thin. Spreads are wide and books are shallow because the only participants are other developers' bots. Do not benchmark fill quality or slippage on testnet.
  • Funding rates are noisy. With few traders, the mark-index premium swings. Use testnet to check your funding math, not to forecast real rates. Mechanics: Lighter DEX funding.
  • Liquidations work the same. The three-stage engine, zero-price partial liquidation and LLP backstop are identical, which makes testnet ideal for testing kill switches. See the Lighter perpetual futures liquidation rules.
  • Resets happen. Lighter wipes testnet state around upgrades. Do not store anything that assumes continuity.
  • No points, no referral. Nothing you do on testnet counts toward Season 2.

Pointing the SDKs at testnet

Python:

import lighter
client = lighter.SignerClient(
    url="https://testnet.zklighter.elliot.ai",
    private_key=API_KEY_PRIVATE_KEY,
    account_index=TESTNET_ACCOUNT_INDEX,
    api_key_index=2,
)

Your account index is different on testnet. Look it up with:

GET https://testnet.zklighter.elliot.ai/api/v1/account?by=l1_address&value=0xYOURADDRESS

Go: construct the client with the testnet base URL in the same way. Full endpoint and key reference: Lighter DEX API docs.

A practice plan for beginners

  1. Day 1: fund via faucet, open a BTC long at 2x isolated, set a stop-loss and a take-profit, watch the liquidation price move as you adjust margin.
  2. Day 2: place limit orders inside and outside the spread, cancel them, try post-only and reduce-only, place a small TWAP.
  3. Day 3: deliberately over-leverage a tiny position and watch pre-liquidation and partial liquidation happen, so the mainnet warnings mean something to you.
  4. Then move to mainnet with $50–100 and 2x–3x. The cost of a mainnet mistake at that size is a few dollars; the cost of learning on a $5,000 position is $5,000.

A graduation plan for bots

  1. Run on testnet until the bot survives a full week without manual intervention, including a faucet refill and at least one reconnect.
  2. Verify nonce handling with two processes on two API keys.
  3. Switch the base URL to mainnet, re-read orderBookDetails, and run at 1% of intended size for a week.
  4. Only then scale. Risk-control checklist: the Lighter DEX bot guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does Lighter DEX have a testnet? Yes, at testnet.zklighter.elliot.ai, with a faucet for free test USDC.

Is there a Lighter DEX demo or fun mode? Not inside the mainnet app. The testnet is the practice environment.

How do I get testnet USDC on Lighter? Call /api/v1/faucet?l1_address=<your address> on the testnet API. It creates and funds the account instantly, though the faucet is sometimes down.

Do testnet trades earn Lighter points? No. Points are earned only on mainnet.

Are testnet market IDs the same as mainnet? No. Always read orderBookDetails on each environment.
