Lighter DEX Restricted Countries, KYC and Terms: Who Can Trade (US, UK, Canada, China and More) (2026)

Lighter DEX requires no KYC but blocks users in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, Ukraine, Iran, North Korea, Cuba, Syria, Venezuela and sanctioned jurisdictions. Here is the full list, how enforcement works, what the terms say about VPNs, and the outlook for US access.

Lighter DEX restricted countries: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, China, Russia and sanctioned countries such as Iran, North Korea, Cuba and Syria are blocked; no KYC is required elsewhere
Blocked jurisdictions. Data as of September 2026, compiled by Lighter DEX Perp.

Lighter perpetual DEX does not require KYC: you connect a wallet, sign a message and trade. Its Terms of Service do prohibit users located in, resident in or organized in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, China, Russia, Ukraine, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela and any jurisdiction under comprehensive sanctions or designated as terrorist-supporting. The official frontend geo-blocks those regions, and using a VPN to get around it breaches the terms. Below you get the restrictions as written, how enforcement works in practice, and the answer to the question that dominates search: whether US access is coming. Verified against lighter.xyz/terms in September 2026.

The restricted-jurisdiction list

JurisdictionStatusReason
United StatesBlockedPerpetual futures for retail require CFTC registration
CanadaBlockedProvincial securities/derivatives rules
United KingdomBlockedFCA ban on crypto derivatives for retail
ChinaBlockedCrypto trading ban
RussiaBlockedSanctions
Ukraine (occupied regions and broadly per terms)BlockedSanctions and legal risk
Iran, North Korea, Cuba, SyriaBlockedComprehensive US sanctions
VenezuelaBlockedSanctions
Any OFAC-sanctioned or FATF-blacklisted jurisdictionBlockedSanctions compliance

Everywhere else, including most of the EU, Switzerland, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Brazil, Turkey, the UAE, India, Vietnam, Indonesia and Latin America, is not restricted by Lighter's terms as of September 2026. Local law may still restrict leveraged crypto derivatives; Lighter's list is about Lighter's exposure, not your legality.

Note the two ways a jurisdiction can apply: location (where you are when you trade) and residency. A US citizen living in Portugal is not blocked by residency; a Portuguese resident on holiday in New York is blocked by location.

How Lighter enforces the restrictions

  1. IP geo-blocking on app.lighter.xyz and Lighter Mobile. Users from blocked regions see a "restricted jurisdiction" notice.
  2. App-store availability. Lighter Mobile is not listed in blocked countries' stores.
  3. Terms acceptance. By connecting a wallet you attest that you are not a restricted person.
  4. Sanctions screening of wallet addresses against OFAC lists, standard for DeFi frontends.
  5. No KYC. Lighter does not collect identity documents. The protocol itself (the rollup contracts) is permissionless; the restrictions are at the interface and terms level.
How Lighter enforces geo-restrictions: IP geo-blocking on the app, app store availability by country, terms acceptance on wallet connection, sanctions screening of addresses, and no KYC documents collected
Enforcement layers behind Lighter's restricted-country policy

There is no whitelist process, no "verified" tier that unlocks restricted regions, and no institutional KYC route for US persons as of September 2026.

VPN policy

Using a VPN to access Lighter from a restricted jurisdiction violates the Terms of Service. Lighter reserves the right to restrict accounts it believes are circumventing controls. In practice, the consequences that matter are: potential inability to withdraw through the frontend (the escape hatch still works at the contract level after 14 days), exclusion from points and airdrops, and legal exposure in your own jurisdiction. We do not recommend it.

Will Lighter be available in the US?

This is the live question of 2026, and it moved LIT's price in September.

Lighter US access signals: confirmed are the founder's seat on the CFTC Innovation Advisory Committee, the US C-Corp structure and a stated goal of a compliant product; not confirmed are any CFTC application, any exchange or broker partner, and any launch date
Confirmed and unconfirmed facts about Lighter in the United States
  • Lighter's founder Vladimir Novakovski holds a seat on the CFTC's Innovation Advisory Committee, which first met on August 20, 2026 to discuss crypto regulation, prediction markets and derivatives infrastructure.
  • Lighter is a US-incorporated C-Corp (Elliot Technologies, Inc. / Lighter, Inc.), which is unusual for a perp DEX and consistent with pursuing registration.
  • Lighter has publicly said it is pursuing a compliant path to offer on-chain perpetuals to US users, but as of September 2026 it has not applied for a CFTC license or announced a DCM/FCM partnership.
  • The Robinhood integration targets non-US Robinhood Wallet users; a US-compliant Lighter product distributed through Robinhood is the obvious ambition and the obvious reason for speculation.
  • Lighter's newly revealed binary options circuits would also fall under CFTC jurisdiction in the US.

Reasonable expectation: US access, if it comes, will arrive as a separate regulated product with KYC, lower leverage and a different fee schedule, not by lifting the geo-block on the current app.

UK, Canada and EU notes

  • UK: the FCA prohibits the sale of crypto derivatives to retail consumers, which is why Lighter blocks the UK entirely rather than offering a reduced-leverage version.
  • Canada: provincial regulators treat crypto perps as securities/derivatives requiring registration; blocked.
  • EU: not blocked. MiCA covers crypto-assets but not derivatives; derivatives fall under MiFID II, and Lighter, as a non-EU decentralized venue, operates in a gray zone for retail. Individual member states have not, as of September 2026, forced Lighter to block them.

Server location and data

Lighter's sequencer and matching engine are operated by Lighter; the company does not publish exact server locations, though latency measurements from the community suggest primary infrastructure in Europe and the US East Coast, with Tokyo-region latency higher. Settlement is on Ethereum, which has no location. Lighter's privacy policy covers IP logging for geo-compliance; it does not collect identity data because it has no KYC.
